Long before it also became known as a great golf destination, the tip of the Baja peninsula in what is now called Los Cabos was better known as one of the best sport fishing locations in the world.

It remains a hot spot for big game fishing and hosts world class events like the Puerto Los Cabos World Cup, which will offer the largest purse of up to $3 million on the International Gamefish Tournament Mexico Series when it unfolds Oct. 10-13. More than 125 teams will start from either the new Puerto Los Cabos Marina or the Cabo San Lucas Marina. For more details about the tournament, go to www.igtournaments.com.

A new wrinkle this year will find a celebrity pro-am being added on Oct. 14 at the new Puerto Los Cabos golf course, featuring a unique hybrid 18 with 9 holes from the Marina Course by Jack Nicklaus and 9 holes from the Mission Course by Greg Norman that are uniquely different in many ways.

Some of the celebrities already confirmed include Samuel Jackson of Pulp Fiction, Jeffrey Baxter of The Dooble Brothers & Steely Dan, Dennis Haysbert of The Unit, Richard Schiff of The West Wing and Ted Tryba of The Golf Channel.

The names of the particiapting professionals were not available, but among the ones mentioned were Lorena Ochoa, Charles Howell, Stuart Appleby, Robert Allenby, Sean O’Hair, Pat Perez, Kenny Perry and Fred Couples.

A unique format called "The Baja Scramble" will be used for the event. All players may hit their tee shots and then the team will pick the best one and all will complete the hole from there. No player’s drives may be used more than five times and each player has to have at least one picked. A Stableford scoring system will be used, awarding four points for an eagle, three for a birdie, two for a par and one for a bogey. All scores will count on the first six holes, the best three on the next six holes and the best two on the final six holes.
